Her parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, and Jan O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she was a graduate of North High School of Wheaton. The model appeared in commercials for a while before relocating into Los Angeles. O'Grady began her career modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then cast as the main character in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
